Go To Newsletter 01 Aug 2007

Ok Ok Ok..

Sorry to give you a heart attack. I do realise that the last newsletter was less than a year ago in September 2005, but so much has happened since then, that I thought now was a good chance to catch up with news.!!! Just so that you would all be ‘up with the play’. This Newsletter is going out with my next Postal Bid Sale 173. If you remember in the last Newsletter, I told of changing staff with both Nicola and Tane leaving. Well Yann also decided that he liked the outdoors life even more than he liked the indoor life. So after 10 years with me he bought a local franchise Lawn mowing round. He has decided that this will give him more time with his son and so we do wish him well with his new endeavour.

Gladys Matondo had fortunately been already appointed to take over from Tane so she was quickly taught how to process the NEW ISSUES. Gladys is also producing the New Issues and Themes lists that are posted out to clients who have an interest in NEW ISSUES. This is currently done on a monthly basis. Let us know if you would like to receive a copy if you do not already. There may be a slight delay to New Issue supply coming up as Gladys has decided to visit her homeland of Congo for a month so we will be without her services during September and early October.

Clayton Blackwood has been appointed to assist me with the lists and orders and stock control, etc. Clayton has not worked in a stamp shop before but has had much experience from his collecting days. His speciality is the German area and he has a good working knowledge of all things that make a stamp different. He has recently returned from a flying visit to Germany. During this time, I took the opportunity to send to many people  the very popular NEW ZEALAND SPECIALISED LIST of stock currently held and  NZ Specials/New Issues/ and NZ Clients, the mid winter specials of albums & accessories etc. I must thank those that have returned the Client Information forms so that I have been able to update the Computer records held. If you have not recently advised us of your updated information, perhaps you might like to just drop us a note of any address changes, your email addresses, and collecting interests. While on this topic, I am always on the look out for new clients

so if you know of any collector that would like to receive our mail outs, please forward their names and addresses

These lists etc have kept us very busy, so much so in fact that shortly I shall be looking for someone to do part time work

to cover such things as making up stamp cards, putting stamps on envelopes so that we can post out the lists, banking, coffee making and other essential duties.

We have had a very cold winter here compared to previous years but I have been told that it is good for things that grow. Well it might be, but I for one do not like the cold and would prefer to be sitting on the Sunshine Coast of Australia where it is always warm and sunny, though I do hear that water is becoming a real problem.. well at least LACK OF WATER. We have certainly had our fair share of rain this year and I can’t wait for the summer weather to come so that I can pull my B-B-Q out onto the deck and spend many an evening cooking the meal out side with a nice glass of wine in one hand and the tongs in the other.

WORK AT ACS Ltd.

We have been very busy with our daily orders and producing all the lists that you receive. We have recently produced not only the lists mentioned above but also many Commonwealth Lists (as I type this, the last of these lists is being sent out for the Countries St Kitts-Nevis to Zanzibar) and also a few Pacific Islands lists. I trust that if you are interested in receiving and subsequently buying from these lists, that we have your areas of interests recorded. The New Issues lists that Gladys has issued seem to becoming more popular all the time. Remember that if you have an interest and not advised us recently, please do so.

SALE 173

This Auction has taken slightly longer than I had anticipated but the coverage of this Bid Sale is very pleasing. Some better material that is included here includes the Christmas card from Great Barrier PIGEON POST which is sure to draw much interest.

We are fortunate to have a second copy of the $2.00 inverted hologram of the Olympics 2004 issue with Peter Snell. (The last copy sold through the Bid Sale was very popular with the successful bidder at $12,100.00 and the bidder was very fortunate as he only won by the slightest of margins. I have noted that recently another example of this amazing error has sold in Sydney through an Auction house there for over $14,000.00).

This was the first example sold by us

The number of collections is also up on the last Sale and also there are some very interesting post cards of New Zealand. There is some interesting Fiji material offered as I was fortunate to obtain a large accumulation for this Sale. The Postal History section also seems to have its fair share of ‘interesting items’ and many New Zealand Errors and Varieties listed through out.

Hopefully the next Postal Bid Sale will only be a couple of months from now. It would be nice to think that Sale 174 would be up and running before the end of 2006 but don’t hold your breath.

NEW ZEALAND POST 2006 NEW ISSUES.

As always, there is considerable interest in the issues that have come out from NZ Post and 2006 seems to be no exception. The first Issue for the 2006 year was the annual YEAR OF, with this year being THE DOG. The next,  75th Anniversary of the Hawke’s Bay / Napier Earthquake was a very interesting issue being put out in the oversized sheet. Certainly this topic bought back many memories for people who were around in 1931. I know my father and mother were only children at the time but can remember the effect it had on everyone in New Zealand. It was also interesting to listen to people who were actually IN the earthquake area at the time. Following this was the Tourism issue with some very colourful popular views of our scenery.
The issue for the 80th Birthday of QEII is very impressive and has adorned many of our parcels that we have sent out. In ROYAL BLUE it certainly is an issue that is very striking  and issued in just a sheetlet of 4. BUT the pocket appeal is ‘very empty’ as at $5.00 per stamp the pocket soon empties.
I have heard of the missing SILVER FERN LEAF & BORDER error but have yet to see one. Keep your eyes open for this could prove very expensive. The Personalised Issue seems to have had a very limited appeal. NZ Post attended the Washington Exhibition and so produced an item for this event.

The next issue was to be the Maori Performing Arts issue and from the pre- issue publicity illustrations, it was obviously going to be one of those issues that was going to be debated for some time as the artist has used artistic licence when portraying the Maori. I must admit that the 45c picture looks more of Asian extract to me.. but then I am no artist. Anyway, there was a great fuss about this issue and how it portrayed the Maori in a very poor light and the almost ‘comic’ type illustrations were not liked by many who had loud voices. There was much debate in the papers and at the very last minute NZ Post decided to withdraw the issue from publication. This meant that stocks that had been posted out to be ready for the release date had to be recalled. Suddenly we all had visions of what happened with the 1996 Health ‘TEDDY BEAR’ issue happening all over again. Sure enough, and despite all good intentions from New Zealand Post, some stocks were sent out to the public who had ordered them prior to release date from the Wanganui Philatelic Bureau. The quantities that had been posted out and NOT RETURNED are very small and I will not list them here as NZ Post has already made an official list of stocks out in public hands. It is disappointing for those that want to have one of everything put out by NZ Post but eventually when these missing stamps find their way onto the market, some people will be able to have their albums completed. The set is currently selling at $18,000.00 and the FDC is available at $27,000.00 and NO!!! Not from Me!!

And no!!! this is not a real one, it is just a scan off the prepublication blurb.

As always though, it has created some interest for stamps, which in some way is always good for the hobby. Perhaps NZ Post should consider going ahead and releasing this issue then all can fill the hole in their collections.

The   2006 Scenic – Renewable Energy issue and while not necessarily the best in this line of the topic,  is worth having in ones collection. I think the $2.00 Solar Lighthouse from Cape Reinga stands very impressively, the eye appeal is very good

The Health issue came and went and is a very non descript issue and NZ Post have made only two of the five stamps issued as being specifically for the Children’s Health Camps with the additional customary surcharge which we find on the HEALTH ISSUE. Of the two values that have the surcharge, NZ Post have advised that the 90c stamp carries an additional 10 cent surcharge (up slightly due too the removal of the 5 cent in New Zealand currency. “SLIGHTLY” being used to describe a 100% increase!!! At least we are told that the entire surcharge goes to the Children’s Health Camps. These Health camps are located throughout the country and help children and families with complex needs to build resilient lives by providing individual, innovative, strength based services that support the development of positive lifestyles. I am all in favour of this but note with interest that our ’donation’ has gone from 6 cents 20 years ago to 15 cents. The way I catalogue the Health Stamps separately in the ACS Catalogue means that I will have a few headaches this year. As I type this, I have just received the latest brochure for the “Gold Rush” issue being released on 6th September 2006 and includes a very ‘innovative’ 45 cent stamp of Gold Panning in the 1880’s where innovative technology has enabled the stamp to be produced with thermographic ink so that when you rub the gold pan, the heat from your finger will dissolve the ink to reveal gold nuggets. I was horrified to read this as I could see there being a distinction between a stamp that HAD and a stamp that HAD NOT been rubbed as far as resale goes. However, as always, I had not read further enough, and it stated that as the ink cooled down the black dot returns. This is a very interesting innovation !!!

Gold Exploration has played a very important part in the early development of New Zealand so this may be an interesting issue and I see that NZ Post will also be using this issue to form one of their “LIMITED EDITIONS” that they issue during the year. It will be interesting to see what else New Zealand Post has in store for us for the rest of the year.

CAN WE HELP YOU

It has been some time that we have come to you with a request for “WANTS LISTS” and so if you are searching for items to help fill your stamp collections etc. then let us know as there is an amazing amount of material that comes in over the counter these days and if we don’t know you are searching for it, often it is sent elsewhere.

In the very near future the New Zealand Stamp Dealers Association AUCKLAND SHOW will be held on 1st and 2nd of September at the Auckland Conference Centre, 27-33 Ohinerau Street in Remuera. I believe there will be up to 11 Dealers present so there should be something for everyone. Opening will be 10am to 5pm each day (very civilised). Also the BIG EVENT of the year is coming up. KIWIPEX ‘06. This is being held in Christchurch at the Convention Centre and is the NATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION for New Zealand for 2006. The dates have been set down as 2nd to 5th November. My wife Robyn, and myself will be travelling to this show and have a stand, so look forward to catching up with many of the South Island Clients that we have not seen for a good while. Perhaps another Bid Sale will be ready by this time and we will be able to distribute copies to those that are not regularly receiving a copy. Hopefully we will have taken a couple of dollars at this show to enable us to enjoy some extra time in Christchurch. Probably 3 days extra will be all, but I guess some time is better than none. The South Island has always been a wonderful place to holiday so I am looking forward to the trip. It is hard to believe that it was over 16 months ago that Robyn and I  spent our honeymoon going from town to town in the mid to top of the South island.

We also look forward to the two National Stamp Exhibitions next year. These are: NORTHLAND 2007 to be held at Whangarei 30th March to 1st April 2007 and then in September there will be a ‘Part National’ at HUTTPEX ’07 in Lower Hutt 31st August to 2nd September 2007. I am guessing that this will replace my normal trip south to the local Lower Hutt/Wellington annual stamp show

We look forward to all these New Zealand Exhibitions and to meeting up with many people we have not seen for some time.
