Welcome

Welcome to our next  newsletter where we attempt to keep you up to date with the happenings in Auckland, New Zealand. Yes I know that many of you will be falling out of your seats with surprise at the ‘speed’ of this next newsletter. Hopefully I will even have another out before the end of the year.

I Wish We are currently in the middle of our winter and so I would give my right arm for a trip to SUNNY Brisbane or north to the Sunshine Coast of Queensland at the moment.
I have never known Auckland or for that matter New Zealand, to have so much rain all at once, though judging from our overseas news, we are not the only place to have been inundated with water.
Many of our towns here had just recovered from a “1 in 100 year” storm only to be hit by another “1 in 100 year” storm a matter of months later. Actually for some, they had just finished putting right the damage from the earlier storm and the same thing happened again. Needless to say they were VERY upset and the Insurance Companies were not amused either. I think many are now going to be loosing their houses as the insurance will not pay for them to be rebuilt. We have not really had any frosts to speak of here in Auckland and we really could do with a couple of really good ones to kill off the bugs and other things that happen in those cold snaps. However, as you can see from the Postal Bid Sale 175 Catalogue we have been very busy here.

The market seems to be very interesting at the moment with some strength coming to the ‘Early New Zealand Issues’. There have been some very interesting auction results from both locally here in New Zealand and from many overseas sales. Also there has been an increasing interest in the “ERRORS & VARIETIES” of New Zealand. While this has been a popular area in the past, there are signs that this is becoming an even more popular area and may well have resulted from the recent discoveries and subsequent sales of the likes of the

2004 $2.00 Peter Snell Olympic stamp with the “Inverted centre” and the incorrect ‘releasing’ by New Zealand post of the HAPA KAPA issue.
This non issue seems to be slowing down a little now as very few if any Catalogue Publishers are listing it. I understand from some of the ‘sellers’ that the sets are becoming more difficult to shift but there are still some of the booklet self adhesive issues dribbling out. It is also interesting to see at our local stamp shows the number of Dealers traveling from one stand to the next picking up some of the lower priced varieties of some of the earlier periods and in particular 1950’s to 1980’s.

Rumor:

I had heard of some 1975 Christmas 5c stamps with missing brown (the value) but the trail to this seems to have been lost. I have recently sold a very large block of 16 of the $2.00 Peter Snell inverted centre which was advertised to my clients by email at $50,000.00 which was ‘snapped up’ very smartly. The seller was a ’happy chappie’ as would anyone be that had only paid Face Value ($32.00) for them. These sorts of errors are NEVER in my purchases from New Zealand Post! The client who purchased this block also got a keen price as I had recently sold a single example of this in my previous Postal Bid Sale for $6,600.00 so for the ones who don’t have THAT many fingers a block of 16 equates to $105,600.00. This is almost LOTTO figures!  Great Interest:
Another area of great interest is the Postal History of both New Zealand and Worldwide. This is not new but it does continue to show great popularity and some of the more serious collectors are driving up prices, as much of this material is becoming harder to find for collections and Exhibits. I have noticed recently that a couple of Auction houses in Australia and United Kingdom have been selling and getting high prices for better Australasian material. This is always an area to keep an eye out for.

WORK AT ACS LTD.

We have had a very busy period since the last Postal Bid Sale closed in May. Gladys has produced some wonderful Thematic and New Issue lists on a monthly basis and it seems that much of this material INCLUDING the THEMES material is keenly sought after and unfortunately some clients are missing out as much of this material is on a first in first served basis. This list is very popular and  posted to those that have expressed an interest in this area, and also emailed to those that have an interest but do not need the printed copy. This actually benefits those on email as they do tend to receive the lists quicker than having to wait for it through the mail. Also it is more cost effective for us to send through email. Our New Issue business continues to thrive and certainly must have the largest client base in New Zealand. Remember that if you have a particular area of interest, we are able to supply most of the issues produced by the main Countries of the World.

Catagory Choices:
This is either BY COUNTRY or by THEME. I have even talked my wife Robyn into collecting and she has enrolled for all New Issues with the theme of WINE! There are not many of these stamps but it is starting to build. Currently there is much demand for the SCOUTS as it is their centennial year and many issues are being produced.

New Lists:
Not to be out done, Clayton has also been very busy with his COUNTRY lists. These are lists of everything we have in stock and often include booklets and First Day Covers of each Country. His recent lists include Channel Islands and Gilbert & Ellice/ Kiribati/Tuvalu. These are always received with great enthusiasm and assist many clients filling gaps that may have been there for some time. Again, all these lists are often on a limited basis and so first in first served. These lists are also available by email and many have made use of this service.

A Little Different:
For something a little different Clayton is currently working on a listing of all our NEW ZEALAND POSTMARKS. This is always well received and this time may be a DIRECT SALE rather than a BID SALE. We are always looking for those better collections that we can break down and list on an individual stamp basis as this is the best way to assist those that need the annoying gaps filled.

TRADE ME & EBAY

Kirk has been working hard on this area and has had some very good results. He has been selling anything from badges/ cigarette cards/ postcards/ coins and banknotes /stamp accessories and also some stamps. It is truly amazing to sit and watch the final stages of a Lot that is selling and when there is LATE interest the price can increase dramatically.
High Price:
With one bank note in particular, we watched it go from just a few dollars to over $100.00 in a very short time as the Lot was closing. I would also advise caution when buying from these areas. I have had some people bring in ‘choice’ items they have recently purchased online only to be shown faults and even fraudulent overprints.
I have even bought online and had to send back some material as it was not ‘as described’.
Best Advice:
I think the best advise with these online auctions where anyone can sell and buy, it should be “BUYER BEWARE”. If an item is NOT AS DESCRIBED, do not be afraid to return it otherwise people that put up this kind of material will just continue. There is no real rules that you are covered by. Trade Me:
Remember though that this Trade Me area is only available to New Zealand & Australia. The name Kirk trades as is AKCTYSTMPS.

Anything we sell always does have our own backing.

So if you have some old bank notes, coins or medals and other collectables lying in the bottom of your draws, pull them out and let us know. You may be surprised by their value (or shocked by the lack of value).

New Zealand Postcards:
We also have extensive stocks of New Zealand Postcards and also some from Australasia, UK, Military etc but lately these stocks have been dwindling so again, search out any and let us know. They do not necessarily even have to be used.

AUCTION SALE 174

Been and gone, but another GREAT SALE for ACS Ltd. As I have mentioned earlier here Lot 1393 the inverted $2 Peter Snell sold at $6,600.00. This is always a VERY SOUGHT AFTER item.
As always the Collections etc of World and New Zealand always sell well and it was pleasing to see the major collection of the ½d Mt Cook sell at well above the conservative Estimate.
It was of interest to both local and overseas clients and finally it was the local clients who won and it is now in a very good home and being well worked through. I am sure this will provide the new owner with hours of interest.
The Large UK & world collection also had much interest and ended being sold well above estimate. Unfortunately the 1935 Pictorial Collection did not reach reserve figure and so is offered again in the current Sale 175.
The world Cinderella’s AIR LABELS sold completely with much interest. There was some interest in the New South Wales and Queensland material. Also there was some good prices in World Postal History and many others sold at Estimate or slightly more. It was pleasing to sell on, some of the higher value Full Face Queens and this is always an area of interest.
An item of note that sold was illustrated in the last Newsletter and this was the KAPA HAKA blank FDC. This created much interest and finally sold at nearly THREE TIMES it’s Estimate. Many other NZ Postal History items sold and also there was some interest in the Post Cards and Cigarette Cards as usual.

AUCTION SALE 175

This must be a record to have a total of 2219 Lots. There are some very interesting items for sale this time. There are many good collections and some interesting Kiloware which is always popular. Also a great chance to CHEAPLY purchase a collection of the New Zealand LIMITED EDITION PACKS with 27 albums at only $2,500.00.
Remember that each one has a unique item and is listed in the New Zealand ACS Catalogue. For those that only want individual albums look to Lots 1642-1664 where they are listed at LESS THAN ISSUE PRICE.
Our list of British Commonwealth & Foreign stamps is fairly extensive this time with much strength in Pacific islands issues. Hong Kong is worthy of note and should create some interest. Australia States again has a great showing.
Note Lot 792 of Tasmania of seldom seen high values.
This time the World Postal History has many 1935 Silver jubilee covers and plenty of other items of interest as a quick glance at their picture pages will show. This sale, again has a great showing of New Zealand stamps and starts with many Full Face Queens.
Then an interesting item is the 1901 1⁄2d Mt Cook part sheet at Lot 1354.

The New Zealand Postal History is something that we have been working on recently and together with POSTMARKS will create interest. A very cheeky item is Lot 1575 4d Taupo with inverted centre. (See below and back page bottom left Auction 175)

HOWEVER the centre has come from another stamp and been pasted on then used on a documents???? As always the Catalogue is finished of with a listing of Cigarette Cards, Numismatic items and finally items that we cant find anywhere else to list!!! Good Hunting and don’t forget Bid Early because where equal bids are  received the winner is the earliest bid.

Bid in whole dollars only and no bids below 70% of the Estimate will be accepted. AS ALWAYS, THERE ARE NO HIDDEN COSTS like buyers commission or the like. Sale closes 1pm Monday 24th September NEW ZEALAND TIME. Remember we are 12 to 24 hours ahead of many Countries.

NZ POST 2007

Since the last newsletter we have had a few new issues. First off the block was the block of 8 issued for the 2007 Centenaries of Plunket, Home of Compassion, Scouting and New Zealand Rugby League. An interesting design but maybe better could have been done. As always it came out in complete sheets as well.
Next came a picturesque 2007 Definitive’s series (pictured here) which was issued to coincide with our “local” change of postage rates.
2007 Definitive’s series

These stamps are a wonderful design and do our Tourism good as the scenes are all beautiful places seen here in New Zealand. It takes in the lowest rate of 5 cents (though we do not have 5c coins anymore?) up to a $3.00 rate which covers our large airmail overseas envelope to other than Australia. This is a continuance of the theme started in 2003. May 9th saw a sheet issued with re-issued values (50c) and called 2006 Personalized. It is such a shame to have to do this but I guess it is all revenue to NZ POST.

Call Me Romantic:
The next issue, to my mind, is THE SET of 2007.

Southern Skies is a commemorative issue of 5 stamps and the Night Skies to me are always worth looking at. [Call me a romantic then].

This set reminds me of the 1998 Scenic Skies issue and both are wonderful sets. Next we had a sheet of “Classic Kiwis” which was an ingenious method of putting “KIWI” terms on stamps. Each stamp has a typical ‘kiwi saying’ and then you rub the stamp to reveal the meaning. Where do they think up these ideas?
Next was a set of stamps of a similar name Clever Kiwis and the stamps show ingenious designs made up by kiwis. Most of this Auction mail out had these stamps used for the postage.
Following the Clever Kiwis are two PROMOTIONAL Miniature sheets for Stamp Exhibitions NZ Post will be attending. The first is for BANGKOK and the next is for HUTTPEX held here this weekend in Lower Hutt. It keeps one poor trying to keep up with the issues, but really when you think of the total cost for the year, it is not that much to spend on ones hobby.
